Hanging by a Moment by Lifehouse

I was walking to work earlier along the Ayala-Edsa overpass when I suddenly remembered this song. It was a hit when I was in college. I remembering listening to the album from a pirated copy that my bestfriend Dris owned. I even had a chance to see Lifehouse live at the Araneta Coliseum when they had a concert there a few years ago.

Desperate for changing, starving for truth
I'm closer to where I started, I'm chasing after you

I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held on to
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

Forgetting all I'm lacking, completely incomplete
I'll take your invitation, you take all of me now

I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held on to
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
And I don't know what I'm diving into
Just hanging by a moment here with you

There's nothing else to lose, there's nothing else to find
There's nothing in the world that can change my mind
There is nothing else
There is nothing else
There is nothing else

Desperate for changing, starving for truth
I'm closer to where I started, I'm chasing after you

I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held on to
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
And I don't know what I'm diving into
Just hanging by a moment here with you

Just hanging by a moment
Just hanging by a moment
I'm hanging by a moment
Just hanging by a moment here with you

Redundant by Green Day

I suddenly found myself singing this song today. I cannot speak, I'm lost for words.

I liked this song the first time I saw it on MTV.

We're living in repetition.
Content in the same old shtick again.
Now the routine's turning to contention,
Like a production line going over and over and over, roller coaster.

Now I cannot speak, I've lost my voice.
I'm speechless and redundant.
'Cause I love you's not enough.
I'm lost for words.

Choreographed and lack of passion.
Prototypes of what we were.
Went full circle 'til I'm nauseous.
Taken for granted now.
Now I waste it, faked it, ate it, now i hate it.

'Cause I cannot speak, I lost my voice.
I'm speechless and redundant, 'cause I love you's not enough.
I'm lost for words.

Now I cannot speak, I've lost my voice.
I'm speechless and redundant.
'Cause I love you's not enough.
I'm lost for words.

Now I cannot speak, I've lost my voice.
I'm speechless and redundant.
'Cause I love you's not enough.
I'm lost for words.

While The Music Plays On by Tony Bennett

I was reading Tony Bennett's autobiography earlier and read about this song. I was on a lunch break at work and searched online for this song. I had chills listening to this song while eating a sandwich. Old music can be wonderful and Tony Bennett remains cool to this day.

Each night in some cafe
I'm on display until the dark, turns into dawn
Up upon the stand, singing with the band
While the music plays on

Each night is just a long
And there where song until the last couple has gone
Then only I must start singing out my heart
While the music plays on

Oh, what madness to discover
Music still possesses all its charms
As I serenade my lover
Dancing by in someone else's arms

But I am not allowed to show the crowd
What happens when romance has gone
I must hide my feels singing through the tears
While the music plays on

Oh, what madness to discover
Music still possesses all of its charms
As I serenade my lover
Dancing by in someone else's arms

But I am not allowed to show the crowd
What happens when romance has gone
I must hide my feels singing through my tears
While the music plays on

Half the World Away by Oasis

I found myself singing this song in my head while talking a walk today. Maybe I'll listen to the whole album like I did during college.

I would like to leave this city,
this old town don't smell too pretty and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

And when I leave this island
I'll book myself into a soul asylum
'Cause I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

So here I go,
I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway

You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

And when I leave this planet,
You know I'd stay but I just can't stand it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And if I could leave this spirit,
I'll find me a hole and I'll leave in it
And I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

Here I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway

You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

No I don't feel down, no I don't feel down
I don't feel down, I don't feel down
I don't feel down, I don't feel down
I don't feel down

Honky Tonk Women by The Rolling Stones

I've taken a new liking of The Rolling Stones, after listening to disc 1 of their greatest hits collection Forty Licks. One of the new songs that really struck a chord with me is Honkey Tonk Women. It's jangly telecaster driven guitars and an oh-so simple backbeat just made me smile when I tried to listen to it. The bass guitar also just comes in at around the chorus. The horns also add a certain vibe to this Stones song. It's just so danceable and will probably be in my list of songs I like to dance to. I like the backing vocals as well. There is no doubt that Honkey Tonk Women belongs to the pantheon of Rolling Stones songs.

I met a gin soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis,
She tried to take me upstairs for a ride.
She had to heave me right across her shoulder
'Cause I just can't seem to drink you off my mind.

It's the Honky Tonk Women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the Honky Tonk blues.

I laid a divorcee in New York City,
I had to put up some kind of a fight.
The lady then she covered me with roses,
She blew my nose and then she blew my mind.
It's the Honky Tonk Women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the Honky Tonk blues.

(yeah!)

It's the Honky Tonk Women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the Honky Tonk blues.

(yeah!)

It's the Honky Tonk Women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the Honky Tonk blues.

Burn It Down by Linkin Park

Last weekend I had an idea of listening to bands I listened to while I was in college that I haven't listened to in a while. The band that came into mind was Linkin Park, who's Hybrid Theory album I really enjoyed.

Burn It Down was the first track from the Living Things album. I found an appreciation for the song, specially the chorus part. I also realized that I don't prefer Mike Shinoda's rap part of the songs anymore. I just feel that it got too stale for my taste. But that's just my opinion at this moment. And that's something that may change soon.

Oh! And I like the album cover as well.

The cycle repeated
As explosions broke in the sky
All that I needed
Was the one thing I couldn't find

And you were there at the turn
Waiting to let me know

We're building it up
To break it back down
We're building it up
To burn it down
We can't wait
To burn it to the ground

The colors conflicted
As the flames climbed into the clouds.
I wanted to fix this
But couldn't stop from tearing it down.

And you were there at the turn
Caught in the burning glow
And I was there at the turn
Waiting to let you know

We're building it up
To break it back down
We're building it up
To burn it down
We can't wait
To burn it to the ground

You told me, "Yes"
You held me high
And I believed when you told that lie
I played soldier, you played king
And struck me down, when I kissed that ring
You lost that right, to hold that crown
I built you up, but you let me down
So when you fall, I'll take my turn
And fan the flames
As your blazes burn

And you were there at the turn
Waiting to let me know

We're building it up
To break it back down
We're building it up
To burn it down
We can't wait
To burn it to the ground

When you fall, I'll take my turn
And fan the flames
As your blazes burn

We can't wait
To burn it to the ground

When you fall, I'll take my turn
And fan the flames
As your blazes burn

We can't wait
To burn it to the ground

Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog

There's nothing like a song wherein Chris Cornell's and Eddie Vedder's vocal talents are evenly meshed and very much compliments one another.

I gained a better appreciation for Temple of the Dog, this song, and  Chris Cornell when I saw the Pearl Jam documentary PJ20.

I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless when my cup's already overfilled
But it's on the table, the fire is cooking
And they're farming babies, while the slaves are working
The blood is on the table and their mouths are chocking
But I'm growing hungry

I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless when my cup's already overfilled
But it's on the table...the fire is cooking
And they're farming babies, while the slaves are working
And it's on the table, their mouths are chocking
But I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)

I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)

I don't mind stealing bread (I don't mind)
I don't mind stealing bread
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)

Unplugged by The Flaming Lips

I fist encountered The Flaming Lips via their critically acclaimed album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. To be honest, even though practically everyone who seems to be musically intelligent was giving praise to Yoshimi, it didn't fit my taste.

It's good though that I try to look around an artists's/band's origin and the Hear It Is album with it's punk leanings somewhat gave me a good understanding of where The Flaming Lips used to belong.

This song specifically reminds me of Nirvana.

In this bogus town, we ain't got nothing to do.
Everybody's pretty cool, hate to stoop.
Thinking they're great, some new kind of drug.
They got their wires pulled out
Tell ya man, they're unplugged.
They're unplugged.

Everybody here is a mental case
Their eyes are staring out into space
Try to talk to 'em and I really get burned
Nobody's home, I tell ya man, they're unplugged.
They're unplugged.

There's too many dumb, fucks.
Man, it really sucks,
spending all their bucks.
They're all unplugged, in their heads,
come on
In their heads.
Sick.

Untethered by Sons of the Sea

This is my favorite track from the self-titled album of Sons of the Sea, a project by Brandon Boyd from Incubus. I just found about this project a few weeks ago. I'm enjoying it so far.

Why is it we compare the truth to staring at the sun?
Listen to me I don't
Listen to me want to
All that fever could be
So much more fun.

Lover, could you remind me kindly what the feeling was like?
Listen to me I will
Listen to me this time
There is no place to
Nowhere to run.

Ooooohhhhhh.
If I open my eyes
I fear I'll fall forever.
Tell us the truth but tell it to us gently,
"Lest we all go blind".

Why am I bracing for a fall the way an enemy might?
Listen to me is it
listen to me because
Maybe you should I don't
Have a little trust?

I'm ready to know before I fall.
Oh what's the crux of it all?
Listen to me Maybe
Listen to me that we
Only see only
See what we) want.

Ooooohhhhhh. Ohhh!

If I open my eyes
I fear I'll fall forever.
Tell us the truth but tell it to us gently,
"Lest we all go blind".
Let go of all the lies
We'll learn to be untethered!
Go anywhere we want to
Go anywhere we want to
Go anywhere we want to.

My heart's open I've become fond of staring at the sun.
My heart's open I've become fond of staring at the sun.

Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden

I had the chance to listen again to this song, which was one of my favorites from the 90s. That not that I was a big Soundgarden fan. I honestly was not, but they were big enough for me to be at least familiar with them and for my older brother to own a copy of this album.

I just realized how great the drum work on this song is. I didn't equate it before with being a heavy song, but man, those drum lines are really angry.

In my eyes, Indisposed,
In disguise As no one knows.
Hides the face, Lies the snake,
And the sun in my disgrace.

Boiling heat, Summer stench.
'Neath the black the sky looks dead.
Call my name through the cream,
And I'll hear you scream again.

Black hole sun, won't you come
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun, won't you come?
Won't you come?
Won't you come?

Stuttering, cold and damp,
Steal the warm wind tired friend.
Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long
For snakes.

In my shoes, a walking sleep,
And my youth I pray to keep.
Heaven send Hell away,
No one sings like you anymore.

Black hole sun, won't you come
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun,
Won't you come?
Won't you come?

Black hole sun
Black hole sun
Won't you come?

Black hole sun
Black hole sun

Hang my head, drown my fear,
Till you all just
Disappear...

Black hole sun, won't you come
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun,
Won't you come?
Won't you come?

Black hole sun,
Black hole sun,
Won't you come?

Won't you come?

You Learn by Alanis Morrisette

I was trying to learn the stock market and learned it in an expensive way. I suddenly remembered the phrase "You live, you learn" from this song. I need to listen to this album again. It really brings me back to the old days.

I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone
I recommend walking around naked in your living room
Swallow it down (what a jagged little pill)
It feels so good (swimming in your stomach)
Wait until the dust settles

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

I recommend biting off more then you can chew to anyone
I certainly do
I recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any time
Feel free
Throw it down (the caution blocks you from the wind)
Hold it up (to the rays)
You wait and see when the smoke clears

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

Wear it out (the way a three-year-old would do)
Melt it down (you're gonna have to eventually anyway)
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

You grieve you learn
You choke you learn
You laugh you learn
You choose you learn
You pray you learn
You ask you learn
You live you learn

Promises, Promises by Incubus

This is my favorite song from the If Not Now, When? album. I've been listening to this song for the past weeks and haven't gotten over how good it is. It's one of the subtle Incubus songs in my opinion. Subtle is good in this case.

I'm only twenty-three for
Another hour, give or take,
I'm a fan of yours
And I need a good mistake

I'm not a sinner, a preacher
All I have is slight of hand
I do magic tricks for
All the boys in the band

Baby could I be
The rabbit in your hat?
I'd swing if you'd hand me..
Hand me the bat

I'm on the road of least resistance
I'd rather give up than give into this
So promise me only one thing, would you?
Just don't ever make me promises..
No promises, no promises

I've never done this before
Promises, promises,
I'm enjoying the illusion
And the things my body says

Now you see me, now you don't
Oh, how well you disappear
What are you running from
And may I interfere?

Baby could I be
The rabbit in your hat?
I'd swing if you'd hand me..
Hand me the bat

I'm on the road of least resistance
I'd rather give up than give into this
So promise me only one thing, would you?
Just don't ever make me promises..
No promises, no promises

Pump it Up by Elvis Costello

I just realized that this blog needs an Elvis Costello post. I would be the first person to say that I'm not really a big Costello fan. I came to appreciate him by catching a cover version of one of his songs, "(What's So Funny) Peace, Love and Understanding".

If my memory serves me right, I discovered Pump it Up via a bass player magazine that discussed the basslines on some Elvis Costello songs.

I've been on tenterhooks
ending in dirty looks,
list'ning to the Muzak,
thinking 'bout this 'n' that.
She said that's that.
I don't wanna chitter-chat.
Turn it down a little bit
or turn it down flat.
Pump it up when you don't really need it.
Pump it up until you can feel it.

Down in the pleasure centre,
hell bent or heaven sent,
listen to the propaganda,
listen to the latest slander.
There's nothing underhand
that she wouldn't understand.

Pump it up until you can feel it.
Pump it up when you don't really need it.

She's been a bad girl.
She's like a chemical.
Though you try to stop it,
she's like a narcotic.
You wanna torture her.
You wanna talk to her.
All the things you bought for her,
putting up your temp'rature.

Pump it up until you can feel it.
Pump it up when you don't really need it.

Out in the fashion show,
down in the bargain bin,
you put your passion out
under the pressure pin.
Fall into submission,
hit-and-run transmission.
No use wishing now for any other sin.

Pump it up until you can feel it.
Pump it up when you don't really need it.

Bring It Back / Gold Cobra by Limp Bizkit

During college and after heavily enjoying Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, I declared in one of my classes that it was the best album I've owned so far. A lot of things have happened after that expanded my musical horizons. Fred Durst and Co. were overthrown by Incubus and other bands since, but I've enjoyed their music every chance I get to.

I recently listened to at least 1st half of this album when I walked from Ayala Avenue towards the office. The walk gives me time to do some exercise, think and listen to music. Music that I might have missed with the busy schedule. I like how these 2 songs come after the other.

Bring It Back has great riffage and timing. I like the club-music like cadence and the way how they switch between the verse and chorus.

Gold Cobra is a classic Bizkit track. I really like the guitar harmonic's on this record.

I'm not and would never be embarrassed about liking and appreciating these songs at this day and age. As Fred Durst says "I don't give a fuck what none of y'all people think".

Bring It Back

Oh, let me hit that, let me get that party song.
Let me turn this place into another motherfuckin' danger zone.
Oh, where the good ones? Where the good ones at right now yo?
We gonna talk this shit till we got this bitch rockin' on the rockship, no shit.
No hell, no way, I'm gonna chop this rock like blocks of clay.
I'm gonna sink your ship so fast, one blast, don't ask, your ass is grass.
No red no green, Imma paint this black and crack your spleen.
Commin' stright from the dark Imma shark, Imma rip your shit like a slasher scene.

Gimmie the racket for the brain.
Gimmie the funky (fuckin' maybe?) shit to make the people go insane.
Gimmie the fuckin' drug we call the music on this track.
Gimmie the fuckin' riff we gonna use to break your back.
BRING IT BACK!

Gimmie the racket for the brain.
Gimmie the funky shit to make the people go insane.
Gimmie the fuckin' drug we call the music on this track.
Gimmie the fuckin' riff we gonna use to break your back.
BRING IT BACK!

Remember all them 90's things, them 90's hits we laced like this.
Commin' to you live 2012 and hell there's still not shit like this.
We still rain the blood in the club like slayer flip it up like Limp Bizkit.
Tie you up to electric chairs and roast yours guts like nuts on Christmas.
Never worry if anybody gonna like me.
Don't give a damn if anybody give a fuck.
I'm gonna say what I want you can look it up.
Wikipedia probley gonna fuck it up.
I don't give a damn, cuz its on.
Most people never last this long.
Most people never find a way but we gonna rock this motherfucker all night long.

Gimmie the racket for the brain.
Gimmie the funky shit to make the people go insane.
Gimmie the fuckin' drug we call the music on this track.
Gimmie the fuckin' riff we gonna use to break your back.
BRING IT BACK!

Verses wild, flippin bitches, grindin trucks, skatin ditches
Hatin hard but hardly hatin, knife and slice your shit like bacon
Sick and tired, you is fired, I'm the truth and yous the liar

The door's shuttin and a knock will do you no good
You're gettin nothin while I rock here in Hollywood
I'll tell ya somethin else you can take it to the bank
I don't give a fuck what none of y'all people think

Holdin the gold it's so gold it's so golden y'all
Golden Cobra

Oh yeah listen what I'm tellin you (I'm tellin you)
There's only one king on this hill It sure as hell ain't you

Holdin the gold it's so gold it's so golden y'all

Just Like I Pictured It by Medeski, Martin & Wood

This is one of my recent favorites and it happens to be an instrumental song. I was introduced to this band when I read an article about Chris Wood's work on an issue of Bass Player mag. I happen to come across this album on one of my CD hunting exploits and bought it.

I just like how the bass line grooves throughout the song. It seems simple enough, and maybe I'll try to learn it.

Beetlebum by Blur

Yesterday, I suddenly pined for hearing this song by Blur. The intro guitar lines suddenly invaded my head, along with correct and misheard lyrics. I kept hearing the outro lines of "He's on, He's on, He's on it" as "She's all, she's all, she's alright",

For some reason, I remember my friend Roman when I hear this song. Maybe it was because this song was released when we were in highschool. That and the Robbie William's song Strong reminds me of him.

Nowadays, I notice how good the bass and guitar work is.

Beetlebum
What you've done
She's a gun
Now what you've done
Beetlebum

Get nothing done
You beetlebum
Just get numb
Now what you've done
Beetlebum

And when she lets me slip away
She turns me on
And all my violence is gone
Nothing is wrong
I just slip away and I am gone
Nothing is wrong
She turns me on
I just slip away and now I am gone

Beetlebum
Because you're young
She's a gun
Now what you've done
Beetlebum

She'll suck your thumb
She'll make you come
Coz, she's your gun
Now what you've done
Beetlebum

And when she lets me slip away
She turns me on
All my violence is gone
Nothing is wrong
I just slip away and I am gone
Nothing is wrong
She turns me on
I just slip away and now I am gone

He's on, he's on, he's on it.
