Palamig by the Eraserheads

I recently joing a band that's main goal is to jam over Eraserheads covers. We pooled the songs we liked to sing (one of my choices was my favorite Bato), as much as possible we didn't want to cover the most popular ones from the 1st three albums. Palamig took me by surprise.

I didn't appreciate the Eheads' latter albums, but this one was really great. The sound is very different from early Eheads and actually approximates Ely Buendia's and Raimund Marasigan's latter bands (Pupil and Sandwich respectively)
.

It's just really fun when you re-discover old music!

Wala na bang magagawa
Meron bang dapat sabihin
Di man lang natatawa
Di man lang tumingin sa akin

Meron nga bang dahilan?
Dapat ba itong malaman?

Naglalaro sa ulan
Nanginginig sa lakas ng hanging
Giniginaw ang itong balat
Nagbibigay init sa atin

Nung tayo'y Magkahiwalay
Unti-unting pinapatay

Sa lamig
Tuyo't tigang na ang aking bibig

Putulin ang mga paa
Itapon sa umaapoy na baga
Bawiin ang lahat ng bumabagabag
Sa isip na puno ng galit

Kelan nga ba araw?
Parusa ang bawat galaw

Sa lamig
Tuyo't tigang na ang aking

Kelan nga ba aaraw?
Parusa ang bawat galaw

Sa lamig
Tuyo't tigang na aking

Tuyo't tigang na ang aking bibig...

Lookin' Up in Heaven by Paul Westerberg

I just bought this Paul Westerberg album, Folker, and absolutely loved this song.

Westerberg just writes the lyrics that hits you on the spot. Melodies are simple yet lovely.

Someday morning I felt afraid
Someone leaving in the world today
I looked low, I looked high

Only missed one friend

Before I go, I look high again

So I went lookin' up in heaven

But you wasn't anywhere in sight

They asked me to stick around

But without you it just wasn't right

I went lookin' up in heaven

But you wasn't anywhere in sight

Sunday evening I get the blues

Someone sleeping' in their tennis shoes

I looked low and I looked high

Only missed one friend

Before I go, I look high again

So I went lookin' up in heaven

But you wasn't anywhere in sight

They asked me to stick around

But without you it just wasn't right

I went lookin' up in heaven

But you wasn't anywhere in sight

I met a little angel, she asked me if I could step outside

"I'll make you forget her, I'll make you forget her

Baby, won't you watch me fly?"

Years go by now, now I have grown

Sunday night and I ain't alone

So you look low and I look high

And miss another friend

Before I go, I look high again

(I love you)

Lookin' up in heaven

But you wasn't anywhere in sight

They asked me to stick around

But without you it just wasn't right

So I went lookin' up in heaven

But you wasn't anywhere in sight

They invited me to stick around, you know

But I told 'em there was another place
I had to check out tonight

I went lookin' up in heaven
But you wasn't anywhere in sight

The Great Debate by Dream Theater

This song starts of an instrumental with excerpts of news clips relating to genetic science thus the title of the song.

I feed it very dramatic and powerful.

What if someone said
Promise lies ahead
Hopes are high in certain scientific circles
Life won't have to end
You could walk again

What if someone said
Problems lie ahead
They've uncovered something highly controversial
The right to life is strong
Can't you see it's wrong

Human kind has reached a turning point
Poised for conflict at ground zero
Ready for a war
Do we look to our unearthly guide
Or the white coat heroes
Searching for a cure

Turn to the light
Don't be frightened of the shadows it creates
Turn to the light
Turning away would be a terrible mistake

Anarchistic moral vision
Industries of death
Facing violent opposition
Unmolested breath

Ethic inquisitions breed
Antagonistic views
Right wing soundbyte premonitions
In a labyrinth of rules

Are you justified
Are you justified
Are you justified
Justified in taking
Life to save life
Life to save life
Life to save life

This embryonic clay
Wrapped in fierce debate
Would be thrown away
Or otherwise discarded

Some of us believe
It may hold the key
To treatment of disease
And secrets highly guarded

Are you justified
Are you justified
Are you justified
Justified in taking
Life to save life
Life to save life
Life to save life

Humankind has reached a turning point
Poised for conflict at ground zero
Ready for a war
Do we look to our unearthly guide
Or to white coat heroes
Searching for a cure

Turn to the light
Don't be frightened of the shadows it creates
Turn to the light
Turning away would be a terrible mistake

We're reaching
But have we gone too far

Harvesting existence
Only to destroy
Carelessly together
We are sliding

Someone else's future
Four days frozen still
Someone else's fate
We are deciding

Miracle potential
Sanctity of life
Faced against each other
We're divided

Should we push the boundaries
Or should we condemn
Moral guilt and science
Have collided

Turn to the light
We defy our own mortality these days
Turn to the light
Pay attention to the questions we have raised

No Way by Pearl Jam

My favorite Pearl Jam albums are the first two they released, Ten and VS. I tried to listen to other titles one day on my way home from Makati and decided to try to listen to the Yield Album.

It was a breakthrough in hearing these songs again and No Way was one of the strongest "Pearl Jamm-y" songs of the lot that could be placed in the first two albums. It has the same grit and angst.

Here's a token of my openness
Of my need to not disappear
How I'm feeling, so revealing to me
I found my mind too clear

I just need someone to be there for.. me

I just want someone to be there for.. me

All the static in my attic-a
Shoots down my sciatic nerve
To the ocean of my platitudes
Longitudes, latitudes, it's so absurd
I just need someone to be there for..
I just want someone to be there for..
Someone to be there for..

'Cause I'll stop trying to make a difference
I'm not trying to make a difference
I'll stop trying to make a difference
No way

Ooh, let's call in an angel

'Cause I'll stop trying to make a difference
I'm not trying to make a difference
I'll stop trying to make a difference
No way
'Cause I'll stop trying to make a difference
I’m not trying to make a difference
I’m not trying to make a difference
No way
No way, no way
Let's call in an angel
Who's calling an angel?

Flying High Again (Live) by Ozzy Osbourne

What i remember about this song was reading about it being used as an audition piece by Ozzy Osbourne to find the replacement for Randy Rhoads so that their tour might continue.

I read that Ozzy was on the corner of his hotel room bed and one of the eventual guitarist (could it be Bernie Tormé? ) played his electric guitar acoustically (not plugged in) and the performance moved Ozzy and he asked the guitarist if he would like to help Ozzy continue with the tour and close out the remaining shows.

I prefer the live version (from Tribute) as it has a faster tempo than the studio version which appeared on Diary of a Madman.

Oh no, oh no
Here we go, here we go now
Oh no, oh no
Here we go now

Got a crazy feelin' I don't understand
Gotta get away from here
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear

Mama's gonna worry
I been a bad, bad boy
No use sayin' sorry
It's something that I enjoy

If you could be inside of me
You'd see, you'd see what light I see
Flyin' high again, alright!

I can see through mountains watch me disappear
I can even touch the sky
Swallowing colors of the sound I hear
Am I just a crazy guy? You bet

Mama's gonna worry
I been a bad, bad boy
No use sayin' sorry
It's something that I enjoy

If you could be inside my head
You'd see that black and white is red

Flyin' high again
Flyin' high again
Flyin' high again
Flyin' high again

Come on and join me

Flyin' high again
Flyin' high again
Flyin' high again
Flyin' high again

Oh no, oh no
Here we go now
Oh no, oh no
Here we go now

Daddy thinks I'm crazy he don't understand
Never saw inside my head
People think I'm crazy but I'm in demand
Never heard a thing I said

Mama's gonna worry
I've been a bad, bad boy
No use sayin sorry
It's something that I enjoy

Flyin high again
Flyin high again
Flyin high again
Flyin high again

Come on And Join Me

Don't Stop by The Rolling Stones

I've had some respect for The Rolling Stones (I was more familiar with the Beatles) for quite sometime before Don't Stop was released as the carrier single for the comprehensive best of collection of the Rolling Stones aptly titled "Forty Licks"

The song just shows how much they haven't changed and that rock n' roll and writing a good song ain't rocket science.

The video for this song featured images referenced from Stone's hits such as Satisfaction, Paint It Black.

Well you bit my lip and drew first blood
And warmed my cold, cold heart
And your wrote your name right on my back
Boy your nails were sharp

Don't stop
Honey don't stop
Don't stop
Baby don't stop

Well I love your screams of passion
In the long hot summer night
But you pepper me with poison darts
And twisted in your knife

Don't stop
Honey don't stop
Don't stop
Baby don't stop

Well the only thing I ask of you
Is to hand me back some pride
Don't you dump me on some dusty street
And hang me out to dry

Ah, Don't stop
Honey don't stop
Baby don't stop
Baby don't stop
Ah Honey

I'm losing you
I know your heart is miles away
There's a whisper there where once there was a storm
And all that's left is that image that I'll find a way
And some memories have tattered as they've torn

Don't stop
Don't stop
Baby don't stop
Baby don't stop
Honey Honey (don't stop)
Baby don't stop
Baby don't stop
Come on honey don't stop
Play on baby
Don't stop
Baby baby don't stop
Ah honey don't stop
Don't ya stop

I know I got ya some picture that I filed away
Honey don't stop
Don't you stop

New Year's Day by U2

I tried to take a listen to U2's War album, having bought it more than a year ago (or was it two) but having never listened to it since. I'm like that, i buy something but don't use it for quite sometime, fairly satisfied that I've already bought the item.

Never did i expect that this is probably once of the Quintessential Albums... an equal to Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and All That You Can Leave Behind.

The album has Sunday Bloody Sunday, but what striked me was thins song, New Year's Day. It was utterly familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time for me, having heard this song used in a movie or two.

All is quiet on New Year's Day.
A world in white gets underway.
I want to be with you, be with you night and day.
Nothing changes on New Year's Day.
On New Year's Day.

I... will be with you again.
I... will be with you again.

Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspaper says, says
Say it's true, it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one.

I... I will begin again
I... I will begin again.

Oh, oh. Oh, oh. Oh, oh.
Oh, maybe the time is right.
Oh, maybe tonight.
I will be with you again.
I will be with you again.

And so we are told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
